The Nutt-House
Oh, dear – where to start? Among the many hats I’ve worn and labels I’ve carried: teacher, freelance writer, DJ, one-time
JEOPARDY champion (would have been two times or more if I had remembered the Boer War!), lifelong New Jersey resident, lector
at Our Lady of the Mountain Church.
My passions are my wife, the lovely Debbie Lockwood, and my family and friends. My loves
include music, film, comic books, and literature. As I get perilously close to age 50 (February 20, 2009 – mark your calendars!),
I count myself as one of the luckiest people in the world to have known such wonderful people and to have had the opportunities
I’ve had.
The Nutt-House
The Nutt-House, which currently airs from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sundays, made its debut on WNTI on August 25, 1990 – Elvis Costello’s birthday, as it turned out. And like the former Declan MacManus, I’ve tried to embrace music of many styles and rhythms. I respect songwriters and the craft of songwriting. That’s one reason why I’m fascinated with covers, because they force you to hear a song in a new way.
My preference is for singer-songwriters in the Americana tradition, but I’m willing to give almost anything a shot. I’m the
station’s resident king of overkill, and I’ll happily devote entire shows to particular artists, including Bob Dylan, Tom Waits
and T Bone Burnett. I also get a kick out of doing theme shows; in the past I’ve devoted entire programs to train songs, car
songs, drinking songs, songs by Texans, songs about food, songs for each state, songs that mention the days of the week, and
so on. You can also count on me to devote an entire show to movie music around the Oscars and songs from musicals the night
of the Tony Awards.
I can’t think of any station other than WNTI that would let me do what I’ve done for these 17-plus years.
